Lanzarote receives the environment certificate for tourist centres.
Lanzarote has received the ISO (International Organization for Standardization) 14001 certificate for the excellent management of environment of its Tourist Centres. This ISO norm is considered as the most important one worldwide for a proper environment system and measures the compromise which the destinations, companies, organisms etc. adopt for the environment. It is based upon the method of: planning-acting-controlling-optimizing. This norm does not really demand any requirements but it asks to meet the responsibilities during a general environment audit by the petitioning organism. At present only 11,000 organizations in Spain have this ISO 14001 certificate.

2,000 people demonstrated in support of better prices
Last Saturday, 2nd February 2008, about 2,000 people demonstrated in Arrecife against the excessive prices in Lanzarote’s supermarkets and in support of the end of the oligopoly of two food companies who occupy three quarter of the sales area in Lanzarote. It was referred to the Hiperdino group, Dinosol, Supersol and Netto, as well as the supermarket chain Marcial. The speaker of the organization for the demonstration, Leticia Padilla, demanded that no further licences should be granted to these two companies and allowance for new suppliers offering cheaper prices should be given. She also threatened with boycotting the mentioned supermarkets. (Source: Diario de Lanzarote)
Lanzarote received an award for the best holiday destination
For the sixth time in succession Lanzarote was honoured on the Tourist fair in Dublin, Ireland, with the award for the best holiday destination under the category sun and beach. The award is granted every year by the Irish Travel Trade. Amongst strong competition there were important European holiday destinations like Turkey, Portugal or the Spanish mainland and the Balearic Islands. In 2007 Lanzarote was visited by 210,000 Irish people. (Source: Hosteltur)
